Once Shah Jahan’s City, Now Old Delhi - A Blog

Originally Shahjahanabad, now Old Delhi, was known as Shah Jahan’s city once upon a time. It was founded by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 and is a walled part of Delhi. It continued to be the capital of Mughals until the reign of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and later renamed to Old Delhi by the British.

If you are an avid foodie and love to try out Indian street food, this is a recommended place where you get authentic Mughal style dishes and other street foods in the overly crowded yet delightful ambience of old Delhi. The aroma of authentic flavours will be everywhere if you are in Chandni Chowk and its nearby areas and its keeps getting better for sure.

Old Delhi architecture is a remarkable illustration of Mughal architecture in addition to everlasting allure and reminiscence. It was walled almost about 1500 acres with 14 gates. Even though most of the walls don’t exist anymore, however the gates are still present including the famous Kashmere Gate (Kashmiri Gate) known for Old Delhi Railway Station and General Post Office of Indian Postal Service, one of the oldest in India. When you walk through the streets of old Delhi, every step you take will lead you to the land of history. In fact, the last remaining walls and the gates of Old Delhi have something to tell.

Red Fort

In short and sweet, Old Delhi offers remarkable pieces of architecture, flavour-filled delicious varieties of food, and a living, breathing piece of Indian history. A must visit place if you are travelling to Delhi .
